Project Growth (Retired)

Our Mission

Currently, Nigeria’s agriculture industry is at risk. The average farmer in Nigeria is over 60 years old the next wave of farmers does not exist. Interest within the industry is marginal. Students are overlooking the importance of agriculture to pursue more sought after professions such as those in medicine and law. Unfortunately, most young people in Nigeria do not consider being a farmer popular nor prestigious; however, Enactus believes it can reshape this negative perception of farming.

Farm to SchoolThrough partnering with Farm to School Africa, Enactus hopes to educate the next wave of Nigerian farmers on the importance of agriculture in business. Through our three step process,  we plan to teach local teachers and students the basics of farming, create low-cost farming technology to improve efficiency, and introduce student-run farmers markets in local communities across Nigeria.

This semester, our team fostered meaningful relationships with the executives of Farm to School Africa, created comprehensive business plans, and effectively outlined future objectives to be met in one month, three month, and six month time frames.

Farm to School 2We hope to visit the Farm to School Africa headquarters in December of 2018 in Nigeria. By stepping foot on the student farms and meeting the executives, we hope to foster a greater understanding of the program and the needs of these aspiring student farmers.

Katy Albiani- Project Leader, Sophomore

Katy is a Media Studies and Economics major at UC Berkeley and is also pursuing an Innovation Design certificate. Joining Enactus as a freshman, she wanted to combine her passion for international social entrepreneurship with her commitment to sustainable agriculture. Growing up in Sacramento, California, Katy was extremely involved in her state 4-H program where she participated in youth livestock and leadership competitions at the county, state, and national level. Agricultural education helped Katy to realize her passion in helping others through agricultural production, and she aims to instill this same passion in the Nigerian youth. She brings her agricultural knowledge into sustaining Project Growth’s mission in Nigerian schools.
